authorities agree, was a daughter and heiress of the cadet Prowse family
of East Anstey, Devon. She and her husband received from trustees,

Sir Geoffrey m. Joan, dau. and co-heir of William de Compton in the manor
of Paignton, Devon. These two were ancestors of Sir Humphrey Gilbert of
Compton Castle, b.1539, knighted 1-1-1570, M.P. for Plymouth 1571, who
founded the colony of Newfoundland 1583, lost at sea, 9-9-1583. Sir
Humphrey was half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh, Captain of Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth I Guard and colonizer of Virginia. Sir Walter sailed
with Sir Humphrey in an accompanying vessel on voyages to America in the
16th century.
Sir Humphrey's son, Capt. Raleigh Gilbert, sailed from Plymouth, England
in the "Mary and John" on 5-31-1607 and arrived on the coast of what is
now the State of Maine on 8-1-1607, where they built a fort called "Fort
St. George" on the Sagadahoc (Kennebec) River. Captain Gilbert
d.12-30-1634 and was buried in Marldon Church near Compton Castle. He m.
Elizabeth Kelly, dau. and heir of John Kelly.

Devon. By 1337, Bamfield had m. (2) Joan, dau. of Wm. Huxham, of that
Devon manor, who died without legitimate issue, as Bamfield's widow. He
also paid homage to his cousin John, Lord Beauchamp of Hatch, for lands
